Robert Gangi served as Executive Director of the Correctional Association (CA) for over 29 years and founded the Police Reform Organizing Project (PROP) at the Urban Justice Center in April 2011.  Mr. Gangi has been an activist, community organizer and public policy advocate in New York City for over 40 years.  He is a recognized expert on criminal justice and law enforcement issues with a particular focus on police and prison concerns.  He has cultivated ongoing relationships with members of the media and policy makers which have been critical to the CA and PROP’s advocacy and public education efforts.  He has written or co-written numerous op ed pieces for the New York Times, Newsday, and Albany Times Union.

Mr. Gangi is also the 2012 recipient of the American Ethical Union’s prestigious Elliott-Black Award, acknowledging especially his enduring dedication to the rights of vulnerable people caught up in the criminal justice system and his life’s work fighting for sweeping prison and police reform.

Rosa Squillacote

is the Policy Advocate of the Police Reform Organizing Project. She is responsible for, among other things, organizing PROP’s public events, drafting and editing project publications, and supervising PROP interns and volunteers. She also teaches classes on Women and the Law at Hunter College as well as Gender and the Law at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Prior to joining PROP, she served as a law clerk at the East Bay Community Law Center, working on reentry policy advocacy focused on employment among formerly incarcerated people, and at the Correctional Association of New York, where she conducted policy advocacy on juvenile justice and LGBTQ youth issues. She became interested in criminal justice issues after her parents were incarcerated in 1997. Rosa holds her JD from Berkeley School of Law, where she concentrated her studies on criminal justice political theory. She received her BA in Political Science from the CUNY Honors College at Hunter.

Colleen Veldt has been working off and on with PROP as an intern since its founding in April 2011. She is now PROP’s Project Coordinator, providing administrative and development support. She hails from Michigan, is a recent graduate of New York University and will be beginning her graduate work at the NYU Wagner School of Public Administration in the fall of 2013, where she will pursue a Masters of Public Administration.
