On the Death of Eric Garner

A response to the death of Eric Garner – who died on Thursday July 17th while being held in a chokehold by the NYPD.

“If de Blasio is serious about reducing inequality, he has to do something to dial back the aggressive targeting of poor people of color by the NYPD. If not, he will exacerbate the inequalities he’s vowed to reduce and undermine police authority – making officers’ jobs more difficult and dangerous and leading to tragic outcomes like the case of Eric Garner.” — Paying in blood for over-policing” by Alex Vitale

The op-ed (quoted above) by Brooklyn College Sociology professor and PROP’s policy advisor Alex Vitale has been, in our view, the most thoughtful and compelling written response to this terrible and tragic incident.

Please take a moment to read the article, and to acknowledge Garner’s life and death.

For those who would like to join PROP in our ongoing dialogue on these issues, please attend our upcoming panel discussion and as always, don’t hesitate to contact us with general questions and/or comments.
