The following is the press release from Robert Gangi, executive director of PROP, from April 4th, 2018.
“If history has taught us anything, it’s that we cannot rely on NYPD accounts of police shootings — there’s too much pressure to protect what’s perceived as institutional interests. We do know, in this instance, that the victim of the police shooting was not carrying a weapon; he had what appears to be a shower head in his hand.
Policymakers & the press should take 2 steps: 1) talk to community witnesses to see if they confirm or dispute the NYPD versions of the incident; 2) Gov. Cuomo should appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the shooting. It will not pass the smell test, the findings will not be credible if the NYPD itself investigates, or the Brooklyn DA, or the state’s Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. Mayor de Blasio should call for an investigation also, but it’s doubtful that he’ll take the political risk.
These steps are in the interests of justice, of a peaceful city, & of communicating to the community & to officers that unjustified police violence, especially in cases that end in death, will no longer be tolerated in our great city. ”
