PROP Petition Day Success

PROP’s April 7th Petition Day was another step forward, complete with high spirits, a good turnout, mild albeit windy weather, and over 1,000 more signatures collected from New Yorkers throughout the city. Impressive press coverage included leading stories on WNYC (NPR) Radio, CBS (1010WINS) Radioand articles in El Diario and the Amsterdam News. The NYPD saw fit to release a response to the CBS Radio coverage of our campaign. NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul J. Browne said it was regrettable that PROP was using police officers “as a political football, especially in an election year, as appears to be the case here.” Actually, it is the Department who is using officers to meet quota requirements and sacrificing the relationship with community members – but it is significant that Department officials now find it necessary to respond to criticism by PROP and other police reform advocates.
